HOUSE APPRECIATES KPK'S PERFORMANCE
Jakarta, Aug 15 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) appreciates the performance of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in its efforts to promote law enforcement, House Speaker Agung Laksono said here on Friday.
Laksono made the statement in his speech to open a House plenary session where President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono delivered his State-of-the-Nation Address on the Draft 2009 State Budget and Financial Notes.
The House speaker said the arrests of state officials by KPK at central and regional level indicated the Commission was doing its best in accordance with the existing rules.
"It means the Corruption Eradication Commission is working optimally to combat corrupt practices at central as well as provincial levels," he said.
About the arrest of several legislators by KPK for their alleged involvement in corruption , Laksono said the House was leaving the settlement of the matter entirely to the KPK.
"The House will leave the case to KPK to be processed in accordance with existing laws," he said.
However, he said the legal process against all parties for alleged involvement in corruption should be conducted professionally by respecting the principle of presumption of innocence.
The House speaker also expressed hope that somebody's involvement in in a corruption case would not tarnish the image of the institution where he or she was working.
