GOVT TO INCREASE CIVIL SERVANTS', TEACHERS' SALARIES AGAIN
Jakarta, Aug. 15 (ANTARA) - The government will increase funds allocations for personnel expenditures and education in the 2009 State Budget in order to raise the salaries of civil servants, teachers, and pensions, President Susilo Yudhoyono said.
The 2009 budget allocation for personnel expenditures would amount to Rp143.8 trillion, up 16 percent or Rp20.2 trillion from the amount in the Revised 2008 State Budget, the President said in his State-of-the Nation Address on the Draft 2009 State Budget and Financial Notes at a House of Representatives (DPR) plenary session here on Friday.
"The budget raise is aimed at, among other things, increasing the income of government employees and retirees by raising their basic net salaries and pensions by 15 percent on average, providing the 13th month salary and pension, as well as improving the system of pension payment," he said.
Over the past four years of Yudhoyono's administration, the monthly salary of civil servants in the lowest rank has been raised 2.5-fold from Rp674,000 per month in 2004 to Rp1,721 million in 2009.
The salary and pension rise was expected to help improve the bureaucracy's performance and the quality of public services, he said.
"The additional budget allocation for education of Rp46.1 trillion, that we have proposed in fulfilling the mandate of the constitution, is used, among others, to raise the salary of teachers and researchers. Thus, the salary of the lowest ranking teacher will be raised to over Rp2 million," the head of state said.
