UNIVERSITY STUDENTS RALLY DURING PRESIDENT'S STATE-OF-NATION ADDRESS
Jakarta, Aug. 15 (ANTARA) - Around 100 students among others from the University of Indonesia (UI), the State University of Jakarta (UNJ) and the University of Gajah Mada (UGM) staged a rally outside the Parliament building while President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was delivering his State-of-the Nation speech inside on Friday.
The university students voiced four demands in the rally, namely the government should lower prices of subsidized fuel oil, and the Parliament's Inquiry Committee should be professional and transparent in investigating the government's decision in May to increase domestic fuel oil prices.
They also demanded that the president attend a planned House plenary session on oil price hike inquiry, and oil and gas companies must be nationalized to enable the country to be self-sufficient.
Budianto, coordinator of the Indonesian University Students Executive Board (BEM), said the demonstration would not be the first or the last, as they would continue to push for clean governance.
The oil price hike has increased the number of the country's poor people and the unemployment rate, according to the students.
