Iranian top legislator hopes Tehran, Cairo resume diplomatic ties

TEHRAN, Feb. 14 (MNA)-- Iranian MP Alaeddin Boroujerdi is hopeful that Iran and Egypt would resume their diplomatic relationship after the establishment a new government in Egypt.

“Considering developments in Egypt and the fall of Hosni Mubarak’s regime, hopefully we can see a quick resumption of diplomatic relations between the Iranian and Egyptian nations,” Boroujerdi,Iranian chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, told reporters on Sunday.

Iran and Egypt cut their diplomatic relationship following the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Currently Egypt has an Interests Section in Tehran.

The senior lawmaker also commented on the political developments in Egypt, saying the Egyptians should be vigilant in the face of plots hatched by the United States and other Western countries.

“It seems that the (Egyptians’) movement will continue until they can achieve their goal which is democracy.”

The Supreme Military Council that took over the reins in Egypt after Mubarak was ousted from power.

Boroujerdi said, “It is in contradiction to people’s demands that the military take power.”
