Al-Azhar joined Egyptian movement late
TEHRAN,Feb.14(MNA)-- On the sidelines of the press conference,World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought Secretary General Ayatollah Taskhiri commented on the role of Al-Azhar scholars in the Egyptian uprising and their support of the protesters.
The Egyptian scholars played an influential role in shaping the revolution by guiding the people and preaching at mosques, he stated.
“(However), I believe that Al-Azhar failed to show its true face and joined the movement late. But I hope Al-Azhar takes the opportunity from now on, acts as an independent organization, makes independent decisions, and (avoids) being influenced by the government,” Ayatollah Taskhiri said.
