JAPAN INVITES INDONESIA TO DISCUSS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT MANAGEMENT

Tokyo, Aug 16 (ANTARA) - The Japanese government and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will invite nine developing countries in Asia including Indonesia to a seminar to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, for further discussions on management of nuclear power plants.

The invitation was conveyed by the Japanese foreign ministry in a release sent to Antara in Tokyo on Friday, since those countries often voiced their intention to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes like the construction of a nuclear power plant.

The nine countries are Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and Singapore, which will be provided with knowhow in the management of nuclear power plants based on the three Ss (security, safety and safeguard).

"Japan will send a number of its nuclear experts the seminar Hanoi to share their thoughts and views on nuclear management especially in relation to its security, safety and safeguard," an official at the Japanese foreign ministry said.

Japan in cooperation with the IAEA will discuss the management of nuclear power plants and the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

The seminar will be a follow up to the results of the G8 Summit in Hokkaido in July 2008, which had called for a expanded initiative in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
