TRAIN ACCIDENT KILLS NINE IN BANDARLAMPUNG

Bandarlampung, Aug. 16 (ANTARA) - A train accident killed nine people, injured 26 others seriously, and 33 lightly in Bandarlampung, Lampung Province, southern Sumatra, on Saturday.

The accident involved a business-class train, KA Limex, which was on its way from Palembang (South Sumatra) to Bandarlampung (Lampung). It happened after the train made a sudden stop causing its wagons to crash into each other.

Bandarlampung Police Chief Syauqie Achmad went to the site of the accident and confirmed that the fatalities were nine.

The injured and dead passengers have been rushed to the nearest hospitals.

Mawardi, head of the Lampung branch office of PT KAI (Indonesian railway company) explained that KA Limex' break had to be pulled because there was a coal train nearby which made a stop to wait for the Limex train to pass. But because their positions were quite close to each other, the passenger train's engineer apparently decided to pull the break immediately.
