SEARCH FOR EIGHT MISSING PASSENGERS OF SUNKEN MV MOLE HALTED
Ternate, N Maluku, Aug 16 (ANTARA) - Rescue workers have stopped their search for eight missing passengers of MV Mole which sank in the waters of Kepulauan Sula district, North Maluku province, two weeks ago.
The search for the missing passengers was halted as there was a little possibility that they were still alive, a source at the Sasana port in the district said on Saturday.
In addition, high waves in the waters made it difficult for the rescue workers to continue their search for the missing passengers, the source said.
It said the eight missing passengers, four of them identified as Efi, Fais, Ade and Simon Srilion, had been declared dead, bringing the death toll to 13.
The bodies of five dead passengers were found a day after the 49-gross-tonage vessel sank on its way from Waikoka to Taliabu in the district.
Police are still interrogating the captain of the ill-fated vessel, Sunaryo.
The cause of the accident is still unknown.
Earlier rumors had it that the MV sank as it was overloaded.
Based on its permit, the MV was only allowed to carry 55 passengers. But there were 85 passengers on the manifest, not to mention tens of tons of goods.
