FORMER PRESIDENT GUS DUR ATTENDS INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION
Jakarta, Aug 17 (ANTARA) - Former President Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid was present to observe the 63rd anniversary of Indonesia's independence at Merdeka Palace here on Sunday.
Accompanied by his wife Siti Nuriyah, Gus Dur was the only former president who attended the ceremony at the Merdeka Palace.
From former President Soekarno's family, only Guruh Soekarnoputra who was present, but none of former President Soeharto's family was seen at the occasion where President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono acted as the inspector of ceremony which started at 10 in the morning.
The ceremony in which proclamation text was read out by People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) chairman Hidayat Nur Wahid, was marked with the sound of siren and 17-gun salute.
