Argentine gov't resists US interventionist measures

Madrid, Feb 20, IRNA – Continued enforcement of the hegemonic and arrogant policies of the US administration in different parts of the world on the one hand and nations’ resistance and vigilance on the other have put the White House under pressure.
The US administration's recent fiasco in Argentine should be taken as an example.
Confused over growing uprising of Muslim nations in the Middle East in recent months, Washington is now facing resistance and protest of the Argentine government against the arrogant behavior of American troops in Argentine soil.
Tension has risen in US-Argentine relation since February 10 following the landing of a C17 Global Master plane, carrying 3,000 cubic feet of military hardware along with eight US miliotary experts at the Buenos Aires International Airport.
The plane was said to have landed at Buenos Aires based on a plan by the US Army to train Argentine federal police forces in order to get involved in taking and rescuing hostages. The training was to be held in February through March.
Based on reports released by Argentinian media, the US ambassador to Buenos Aires had already provided Argentine Justice Ministry and Security with a list of items the plane was supposed to carry.
However, when the aircraft landed at the airport, it was revealed that more than one third of the items were undeclared and the US army showed reluctance to reveal the items in details.
The tension heightened as Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner assigned a team, comprising Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and Transport Secretary Juan Pablo Schiavi and a number of special police and security forces, on February 11 to look into the consignment at the airport.
Early estimates revealed that the consignment included a number of high caliber machineguns, very powerful munitions, a box full of expired drugs such as morphine and hallucination pills, along with the already declared material.
Argentine officials, however, grew further suspicious when US army personnel did not allow the opening of large cargo consignments.
Finally, Timerman gave the US forces and the country’s embassy staffer a one-hour ultimatum to open the cargo containers in orer to be checked.
Having heard of the ultimatum, a US colonel then asked Argentinians not to open the consignment in the public arguing that if the cargo was photographed by spy satellites, the US security would be put at risk.
After investigations, it was revealed that the cargo included three highly sophisticated GPS , three encryption communication devices, and some drugs provoking the nerve system.
Also it contained two memory cards, a key, 12 information softwares, a hard disc and communications encryption codes along with a special pamphlet bearing the following statement in 15 languages: I am an American soldier arrested by your government. Please inform my embassy of the issue.
Reports say some of items inside the cargo have not been revealed upon the request of the US administration.
The training course was cancelled due to discrepancies between the contents of the consignment and those mentioned in the bill of landing and the US ambassador instantly ordered stoppage of the operation and departure of the plane for the US before offloading its cargo.
The Argentine government’s insistence on probing the issue shocked and angered Washington.
The US State Department summoned the rgentine Ambassador, calling for speedy return of the confiscated items by the country’s customs officials.
Argentine Foreign Ministry too issued a statement to protest the US move, urging Washington to offer reasons for shipment and final destination of the cargo./end
