THREE KILLED IN SUSPENSION BRIDGE COLLAPSE IN W SUMATRA

Sijunjung, W Sumatra, Aug 17 (ANTARA)- Three people were killed when a suspension bridge collapsed in Pakan Jumat vilage, Nagari Sijunjung subdistrict, Sijunjung district, West Sumatra province, on Sunday (Aug 17) afternoon.

The dead were identified as Rohana (82) from Pakandangan village, Nibar (60) from Tiku, both in Padang Pariaman district, and Nurbaiti (70) from Lunang Silaut, Pesisir Selatan district, police said here on Sunday.

Police Commissioner Jupnedi, deputy chief of Sijunjung police precinct confirmed here that the accident happened when many people were passing the bridge on their way for a homage to Sheikh Abdul Wahab's grave.

Paying homage to the Sheikh's grave was an annual tradition of the local muslims in observance of the Ramadhan fasting month.

The people fell into the Batang Sukam river, he said, causing the death of the three persons, while five others sustained serious injuries and another six people slightly injured.

It was said that a many people on some 70 minibuses were heading to Sheikh Abdul Wahab's grave to pay homage.

They should pass through the 90 meter suspension bridge to reach grave. The bridge was about seven meters above the river's surface.
