RELIGIOUS LEADERS CAN FUNCTION AS INTER-FAITH DIALOGUE PIONEERS

Jayapura, Aug 18 (ANTARA) - Relgious leaders in Papua, the easternmost province of Indonesia, were resolute to play a role as inter-faith dialogue pioneers to enable their adherents to live in peace and brotherhood.

The remark was made by Chairman of a "Fajar Timur" theological phylosophy school Pastor, Dr Neles Tebay Pr here on Monday following the importance and strategic presence of religious leaders in building a just, peaceful and prousperous Papua.

"On December 3-7, 2007, at least 50 religious leaders in Papua gathered in Sentani for a dialogue and joint reflection on various problems of life facing religious adherents as integral part of the Papuan people. Under a sincere spirit and critical attitude, religious leaders had the commitment to play a role as advisor, mediator, carrier of truth, and inter-faith dialogue pioneers," he said.

Religious leaders are present to give their views and advice to their followers and the government on problems facing Papua.

In addition, religious leaders could appear as mediators providing solutions in preventing conflicts and using religious materials as a guidance.

As carriers of truth, they recorded, analized and made a report on violence or conflicts in their respective areas. The report was to be submitted to the relevant authorities.

Religious leaders were required to form a dialogue forum, as a media to discus the existing issues like religious leaders cooperation forum (FKPP) or Religious Believers Cooperation Forum (FKUB).

Furthermore, religious leaders in Papua continued dialogues on the building of Papua as a peaceful land.
