INT`L WORLD EXPECTED TO CONTINUE SAFEGUARDING PEACE IN ACEH
Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Aug 18 (ANTARA) - Deputy Governor of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Muhammad Nazar hoped that the international world continued safeguarding peace in that region so that the local population could rebuild and reconstruct the region.
"Peace in Aceh could come a reality because of the international world's participation and support, so that the people could rise and build their economy," he said when receiving the visit of Presidential Friends of Indonesia from 22 countries here on Monday.
Muhammad Nazar said the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on peace between Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) signed in Helsinki in August 2005 could created peace after gripped in a war for over 30 years.
The farmers had been accustomed to cultivating their land, while small businessmen could concentrate on developing their businesses. Practically the people's economy could be improved significantly.
Therefore, the Aceh government supported the central government and the international world to continuously socialize peace to the local population, so that MoU could be constantly applied to this province, the deputy governor said.
It was said that under the MoU, some legal products had been made as could be seen from law No 11/2006 on the Aceh government and local political parties which could participate in next year's general elections along with the national political parties.
Then there is Aceh Reintegration Body whose programs are to make an economic recvery and a recovery of the conflict victims and former GAM members funded by the central government.
