MAHFUD ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF CONSTITUTIONAL COURT
Jakarta, Aug 19 (ANTARA) - Mohammad Mahfud MD was elected chairman of the Constitutional Court for the 2006-2011 period succeeding previous chairman Jimly Asshiddiqie here on Tuesday.
Mahfud won the Constitutional Court (MK)'s chairmanship with five votes during a two-round voting by nine constitutional judges at the MK building. Jimly Asshiddiqie secured four votes.
In the first round, Mahfud and Asshiddiqie shared the same number of four votes because one of the nine constitutional judges abstained.
Mahfud, who was a former legislator, was elected member of the MK and had his oath taken by President Susilo Bambang Yudhohono on April 1, 2008.
