EU member states give green light to Libya sanctions

Berlin, Feb 26, IRNA -- European Union countries agreed Friday to impose sanctions on Qaddafi regime over its deadly crackdown on peaceful protesters in north African country, German foreign ministry sources were quoted saying in Berlin.

The embargo is to include a visa ban and asset freeze on top members of the Qaddafi regime, in addition to outlawing the delivery of both military hardware and products which could be deployed to suppress popular demonstrations.

The embargo is to be directed at Qaddafi and his clan as well as his closest allies.

On Wednesday, EU states approved to suspend arms exports and freeze talks on a planned EU-Libya cooperation accord.

On Monday, the EU foreign ministers strongly condemned the lethal clampdown by Qaddafi's security forces, among them numerous foreign mercenaries./end
