Pak analyst warns against US-Afghan treaty

Islamabad, Feb 26, IRNA – A Pakistani expert on Afghan affairs here Friday warned possible 'strategic treaty' between United States and Afghanistan is against stability of whole region.
Talking to IRNA, the former Pakistani Ambassador to Afghanistan Rustam Shah Mohmand, said that the treaty is very ‘dangerous’ for the security of Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan.
The analyst endorsed the statement of Iran's Foreign Ministry against impacts of the treaty.
“The treaty is against peace, stability and security in Afghanistan and the region’, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said in a statement.
“I fully support the statement of Iran’s Foreign Ministry as there is no doubt about that the treaty could permanently destabilize the region”, Rustam Shah Mohmand stated.
The United States reportedly plans to set up permanent bases in the war-torn country to keep US troops in Afghanistan beyond the 2014 withdrawal deadline.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has not given a date for finalizing the deal with Washington, but said any long-term partnership would need to be approved by the parliament.
If an agreement is reached on permanent bases, the US troops will remain on Afghan soil beyond the planned transfer of security responsibilities by the end of 2014.
Rustam Shah Mohmand regretted that Pakistan government has failed to understand the gravity of the matter. “The treaty could have disastrous impacts on Pakistan”, he opined.
He was of the view that resistance against the government in Afghanistan could be increased after the treaty adding that it would undermine chances of dialogue between Afghanistan government and the rebel groups.
The analyst urged Iran and Turkey to oppose the treaty and increase diplomatic and public pressure on Afghanistan to avoid it.
“The Afghan people must understand that this treaty is against their national interests”, opined the former Pak diplomat.
The analyst expressing his views said that the issue Afghanistan cannot be solved through forces, as rather the US-led forces have to leave the country to bring peace back into the region.
The decade-long war in Afghanistan has become more unpopular due to the rising death toll among both the Afghan civilians and the US-led foreign forces.
The US currently has about 100,000 troops in Afghanistan. The total number of coalition forces in the country is 150,000.
The presence of that many foireing forces in an Islamic country has definitley had its extremely negative socail and cultural effects that are far beyond any possible positive security benefits they could have had, notwithstanding that there has been next to none in that respect, either.
Rustam Shah Mohmand is specialist of Afghanistan and Central Asian affairs and a renowned security analyst. He has served as High Commissioner of Pakistan to Afghanistan and has held position of Chief Commissioner Refugees for around ten years.
