RIZAL RAMLI DENIES FINANCING STREET RALLIES
Jakarta, Aug 19 (ANTARA) - Chairman of the Indonesian Awakening Committee (KBI) Rizal Ramli denied on Tuesday that the committee had financed a series of anti-fuel price hike rallies that turned anarchic some time ago.
Rizal made the denial after he underwent questioning as a witness in the case at the National Police Headquarters here.
He said the KBI was not involved in the rallies except the May 20, 2008 rally that involved hundreds of thousands of people.
He admitted that the committee had spent a sum of money on a number of activities including visits to several parts of the country but not on anarchic street rallies.
"The May 20 rally held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of national awakening took place at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout and later in front of the State Palace," he said.
The May 20 rally ran peacefully, he said.
Asked to comment on the rally outside the parliament building that turned anarchic on June 24, he said the rally had nothing to do with the KBI.
"I myself was in Cirebon on June 23-24 for a religious get-together while my secretary general (Ferry Joko Yuliantono) was in China," he said.
Rizal said the questioning ran in a professional and proper way. "I am amazed by the way how a number of chief commissioners questioned me."He told the investigating team that the KBI was set up to provide "a new road" for the Indonesian nation after "the old road" proved fruitless.
Soegeng Teguh Santoso, Rizal's lawyer, said his client would be questioned again on Thursday as a number of questions had not yet been answered.
The National Police Headquarters once summoned Rizal on August 14 but he failed to show up because the date coincided with the launching of his book.
Police later served a second summons on him for questioning on August 19.
Police are detaining KBI Secretary General Ferry Juliantoro for his alleged part in the encouragement of anti-fuel price hike rallies.
He was arrested at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport upon arrival from a visit to China.
