GOVT ADVISED TO POSTPONE AMROZI ET AL'S EXECUTION

Medan, N Sumatra, Aug 19 (ANTARA) - The government should postpone the execution of Bali I bombers Amrozi, Muklas and Imam Samudra so it can punish the mastermind behind the terror attack, an observer here said.

Considering the type of the bombs used and the magnitude of the explosions in the October 12, 2002 attack, it had been established the explosives were made overseas, Aldian Pinem, president of the Legal and Political Struggle (PHP) told reporters here Tuesday.

Therefore, he said, it was strongly suspected a foreign party was the mastermind behind the attack. "The more so because the explosive material used, C4, is rarely found in Indonesia." he said.

He said the execution of Amrozi et al needed to be postponed so that they could testify against the foreign mastermind after the latter had been captured.

Considering the type of explosive material used and the magnitude of the explosions, there was strong reason to believe Amrozi et al were only the executors of the bombing.

If the trio were put to death now, it would be difficult to punish the mastermind because the prosecution would then no longer have key witnesses.

He said the government should not use the fact that the mastermind had not yet been caught as a reason to execute Amrozi et al soon.

The government should make optimum use of its security agencies such as the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) and National Police to identify and capture the Bali I bombing's mastermind. Only after this was accomplished and Amrozi et al had given their testimonies, should the trio's death sentence be carried out, Pinem said.

According to the records, Amrozi, Muklas and Imam Samudra were found guilty in the Bali bombing on October 12, 2002 which killed 202 people, injured 300 others and devastated 47 buildings.

The explosions which also burnt hundreds of cars were heard within a radius of 12 kilometers from ground zero.

Amrozi et al were sentenced to death in August 2003 by a panel of judges of the Denpasar District Court led by I Made Karna SH.

The trio's appeal of their sentence was rejected by a panel judges in the Supreme Court (MA) led by Toton Suprapto, SH. Their request for a judicial review of their sentence was also turned down in MA's Letter No. 257/PAN/VII/2008 to the Denpasar District Court.
