PRESIDENT TO OPEN INT'L ASTRONOMY OLYMPIAD

Bandung, Aug 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to open the second International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) at the presidential palace in Jakarta on Wednesday.

"The president will open the IOAA at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday," IOAA Secretary General Chatief Kunjaya said here on Tuesday.

Representatives of a total of 23 countries will take part in the IOAA which will be held in Bandung and Lembang district, West Bandung, from August 20 to August 27, 2008.

The participants will come from Iran, Myanmar, China, Singapore, Thailand, India, Cambodia, Brazil, Poland, Lithuania, Bolivia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Romania, South Korea, Greek, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Nigeria.

Previously, participants from Mexico, Cuba, Portugal, Laos and the Philippines withdrew from the event.

Kunjaya said some 95 students who would be taking part in the IOAA should be not older than 21 years and were not yet attending universities.

Besides, 41 team leaders and 12 observers will also attend the second IOAA.

This year, Indonesia is represented by two teams in the event, he said adding that in the last Olympiad Indonesia was ranked fourth in the list while Thailand emerged as the overall champion.
