CLOSER RI-CHINA RELATIONS INEVITABLE : ENVOY

Beijing, Aug 19 (ANTARA) - Closer diplomatic relations between Indonesia and China in the future are inevitable because the two countries occupy politically and geographicqlly strategic and important positions, Indonesian Ambassador to China Sudrajat said here on Tuesday.

"Closer bilateral relations between the two countries at present and in the future cannot be avoided," Sudrajat said, adding that the ties should even been be improved in various fields.

According to him, Indonesia and China had strong emotional ties since they reestablished diplomatic relations in 1990.

He said Indonesia-China bilateral relations got even better since a Strategic Cooperation accord was signed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and President Hu Jintao several years ago.

Sudrajat added the two countries also signed various cooperation agreements in the fields of economy, politics, security, defense, law, tourism, and even social culture, and all these ties would be stepped in the future.

In the fields of security and defense, he said, the defense ministers of the two countries in November 2007 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation.

"The cooperation covered among other things exchange of military personnel and maybe the purchase of military equipment," Sudrajat said.
