NUMBER OF FOREIGN TOURISTS TO TANGKAHAN LEUSER UP 100 PERCENT

Langkat, N Sumatra. Aug 19 (ANTARA) - The number of foreign tourists to the eco-tourist object Tangkahan, Langkat regency, in the June-August 2008 period increased by 100 percent, while in the same period last year their number reached only 400.

"Last year until August, their number reached only 200 out of the 700 throughout the year," executive chairman of the Tangkahan Tourism Institute (LPT), Sehukur Sembiring said in Tangkahan, some 93 kilometers from Medan, said on Tuesday,Most of the tourists came from Europe and Japan, and mostly arrived in the July-August period.

"Thirty tourists from Greece had just left Tangkahan after staying two nights in Tangkahan, the Mt Leuser National Park. They said they were amazed by Tangkahan which is still so natural and original," he said in the company of Manager Community Tour Operator Darwinta Sembiring.

Due to the great number of foreign tourists, many local guests were unable to stay at the four hotels overlooking the Leuser forest, which have only 32 rooms.

The tourists also have to wait for their turn for an elephant ride through parts of the forest at Rp160 thousand per person for a ride of two hours.

"Tangkahan has become increasingly popular, but the local government has not been adequately supporting the tourist spot by for instance providing adequate roads, and power network was even still non-existing," Darwinta said.

Some 30 kilometers of road from and to Tangkahan is in a deplorable condition. Consequently it took five hours to reach Tangkahan, which should take only two hours.

Chairman of the North Sumatra Tourism Agency Henry Hutabarat said that the road from and to Tangkahan was very bad, but nothing had been done about it by the local administration.

"I will soon report this to North Sumatra Governor H Syamsul Arifin. Tangkahan is a very popular eco-tourist objects among foreign tourists, and therefore deserved serious attention from the government," Henry who is head of tourist travel groups of journalists in Medan.
