PRESIDENT : EDUCATION CAN HELP SOLVE MANKIND'S PROBLEMS

Jakarta, Aug 20 (ANTARA) - Education can play an important role in overcoming various problems that mankind is facing at present, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Wednesday.

The president made the statement in his speech opening a Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad at the State Palace.

"Education plays an important role. Not only does it benefit the individual and the country concerned but it also helps to solve the problems of mankind," Yudhoyono said.

The head of state in this context referred to such global problems as the energy, food crises, and even the potential clean-water crisis.

"We can only solve those problems by changing our consumptive lifestyle, and by means of technological innovation," Yudhoyono said.

He added that good education would encourage technological innovation.

About the merits of astronomy and astrophysics, the president said "History has shown that countries or states that master astronomy and astrophysics usually reach a high level of civilization."The Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad is to take place in Lembang and Bandung, West Java, from August 19-28, and to be participated in by 95 contestants from 24 countries.

Some of the participating countries are Iran, Myanmar, China, Singapore, Thailand, India, Romania, South Korea, Greece, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Nigeria, and Indonesia.

Indonesia will send two teams, Team A and Team B, to the event.

Team A is made up of Ady Suwardi of Sutomo Senior High School (SMA Sutomo) in Medan, North Sumatra, Eky Valentian Febriano of state SMA-3 in Bogor, Esther Brigitta of Penabur Senior High School-1 in Jakarta, Mikha Benanta Purba of Taruna Nusantara Senior High School in Magelang, and Lorent da Silva of Semesta Senior High School in Semarang, Central Java.

While Team B consists of Ridlo Wahyudi of state Senior High School in Rembang, Veena Salim of Methodist Senior High School-3 in Medan, North Sumatra, Marshiella of state Senior High School-8 in Jakarta, Amar Kusuma and Ahmad Yudo Diponegoro of Taruna Nusantara Senior High School in Magelang, Central Java.

Besides opening the Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad, the President on Wednesday also launched a mass inexpensive school textbook provision program designed by the National Education Ministry.
