RI'S NATURAL RUBBER EXPORTS REACHED US$4.6 BILLION IN 2007

Yogyakarta, Aug 20 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's natural rubber exports in 2007 reached a total value of US$4.6 billion, accounting for 40 percent of the overall amount the country earned from export of agricultural commodities, Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono said.

"World natural rubber production is expected to reach 13 million tons in 2020 and Indonesia is predicted to become the world's largest producer with an output of 4 million tons," Apiyantono said at a workshop on rubber agribusiness here Wednesday.

The government, he said, had adopted a policy to develop the national rubber industry through revitalization of plantations to benefit from the current favorable international price of rubber.

The main target of the program was to replant old plantations and expand the area of farmers' plantations by 60,000 to 85,000 hectares, and by the end of 2010 the country could have 300,000 hectares of rubber plantations.

However, the revitalization program could not yet be implemented in the ways expected due to various obstacles , including low supply of quality seeds, the minister said.

"The Rubber Research Center must take the initiative to contribute to the acceleration of rubber plantation revitalization, especially in technology development for farmers," he said.
