German defense minister to resign over plagiarism scandal: report

Berlin, March 1, IRNA - German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, is to resign on Tuesday for his role in a plagiarism scandal which has rocked the country's political scene, the German Press Agency dpa quoted government circles as saying in Berlin.
Guttenberg has already submitted his resignation to Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to the top-selling daily Bild which had been a staunch backer of the defense minister in the 'copy-and-paste' affair.
The 39-year-old minister handed in a doctoral dissertation in 2006 that included large segments of copied text without footnotes.
The University of Bayreuth, which had awarded him a first-class doctorate, revoked it last week.
The refusal of Chancellor Angela Merkel to fire Guttenberg from her cabinet led to strong criticism by the nation's academia as around 26,000 academics signed a protest petition./end
