AMROZI ET AL TO ACCEPT ANY MANNER OF EXECUTION : LAWYER

Cilacap, C Java, Aug 20 (ANTARA) - The three convicted Bali I bombers - Amrozi, Imam Samudra and Ali Gufron alias Mukhlas - are ready to be executed in whichever way it must be done, one of their lawyers said.

"They are not in a position to choose the way in which they are going to be executed," Qadar Feisal, a member of the Muslim Defense Counsels' Team (TPM), said here Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters at the Wijayapura Pier here after meeting Amrozi et al at the Batu correctional institute on Nusakambangan island, Feisal said if the trio made a choice, it would mean they agreed to be put to death.

He said the trio now only wanted to meet with members of their families before being executed.

"They hope the Higher Prosecution Office will permit members of their families to meet them before the Ramadhan fasting month starts in early September," he said.

Feisal had previuusly said that Amrozi et al were ready to die but wanted their execution to be carried out by beheading instead of by a salvo from a firing squad.

"This is why, they have filed a suit with the Constitutional Court for a judicial review of the existing law on procedures to implement death sentences," Feisal said when contacted by phone from Serang on Saturday.

Since they were sentenced to death, Amrozi, Imam Samudra and Mukhlas had been insisting that they should be executed according to Islamic shariah which is by beheading, Feisal said.

Execution by a firing squad as stipulated in the existing law in Indonesia could mean torture because when the first salvo aimed at the heart was not effective, the firing squad had to fire a second salvo aimed at the head of the prisoner, he said.

Security in Cilacap, Central Java, and Bali has been tightened ahead of the execution, expected to be carried out before the start of Ramadhan fasting month in September.
