German FM threatens Libya with further sanctions

Berlin, Mar 6, IRNA -- German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Saturday threatened Libya with further sanctions amid the escalating conflict in the North African country.
Talking to the Sunday daily Welt am Sonntag, Westerwelle urged the UN Security Council to deal with the situation in Libya, saying the UN sanctions imposed against Tripoli for its brutal crackdown of the popular uprising were not sufficient.
'The flow of money has to be cut off,' the minister said.
Westerwelle reiterated that any further punitive international actions against the regime of Libyan dictator Moammar Qadhafi required not only the authorization of the Security Council but also the support of Libya's neighboring countries.
A non-permanent member in the UN Security Council, Germany has strongly backed UN and EU sanctions against Libya and has not ruled out its approval for establishing an international no-fly zone over the Arab country.
Westerwelle has repeatedly called on Qadhafi to call it quits after ruling Libya with an iron fist for over 40 years./end
