Amir orders dispatch of 14 tons of medicine, aid supplies to Libya

CAIRO (KUNA) - Upon orders by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, 14 tons of medicines and other relief supplies is to be dispatched for the refugees fleeing Libyan areas afflicted with violence as the protests and confrontations with the Qadafi regime continue.
The Kuwaiti Red Crescent Society (KRCS) is to provide support and oversee the distribution of the shipment as ordered by His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad.
Head of the KRCS delegation Msaid Rashid Al-Enizi said the Board Chairman Barjas Hmoud Al-Barjas decided to organize a convoy to the Libyan-Tunisian borders and another to the Libyan-Egyptian to best aid the victims and the injured.
The first batch reached the Tunisian port of Zarzis, composed of medical supplies, food items, and other items. The Ambassador Dr. Rashid Al-Hamad is overseeing the procedures for the permits and like himself.
Convoy member Dr. Manal Mansour Buhaimid said the KRCS is bringing in aid in two phases; 7 tons of supplies are to be taken to the Ras Jdair Libyan-Tunisian border area including mobile operating theatres and medical equipment. The second phase would see delivery of the remaining 7 tons to Marsa Matrouh Airport in cooperation with the Libyan red crescent, and the supplies would later be delivered and stocked in Msaed area.
As to the situation on the border, Dr. Buhaimid said she heard an estimate of over 20,000 refugees, according the UN refugee agency reports. The situation is harder on the Libyan-Egyptian border where the refugees suffer from fatigue and face difficulties related to inclement weather and there is a grea t need for field hospitals and clinics there.
She also pointed out that she had seen families with young children among the refugees, which requires special care from the Egyptian red crescent. This involves set up of tent cities with portable sanitary facilities and a great supply of blankets in view of the cold. Transport to take the refugees to nearby cities is also needed.
The Arab doctors union is playing an important role in the midst of this situation, and there is much need for cooperation and coordination while the refugees, mostly the expat laborers who used to work in Libya, suffer "a humanitarian crisis".
Another KRCS volunteer, Adnan Haidar, said a great number of young Kuwaitis are eager to volunteer with the crescent whenever such mission is ordered or need arise for relief work.
He added he took part in previous convoys to Pakistan after earthquakes and to Yemen after floods, and he urged youth to come forward and help relief missions.
Voluntee r Abdulrahman Al-Salih pointed out that volunteering time and effort to help with KRCS convoys is an honor and one means to serve the homeland and humanity.
The KRCS relies completely on volunteers for its human resources and offers care and relief aid wherever need be around the world.
The KRCS is an independent body and member of the international union of red crescent societies since 1966, its very first board of directors named only in 1965. It works on the principles of neutrality, non-alignment, international reach, and humanity.
The society is currently chaired by Barjas Hmoud Al-Barjas and is assigned by the Ministers Council to organize charity events and dispatch relief convoys when needed.
