Abu Dhabi Film Commission to invite four Emirati filmmakers to Cannes Film Festival 2011
Abu Dhabi, Mar 6, 2011 (WAM) - Abu Dhabi Film Commission (ADFC) last Thursday announced, for the second consecutive year, that four Emirati filmmakers will be offered the chance to join the ADFC delegation at the Cannes Film Festival, running from 11 - 22 May, 2011. These filmmakers will take part in festival and market events, screenings, filmmaker forums and panels, as well as meeting with industry professionals at the Abu Dhabi Pavilion in Cannes.
The Film Commission will also submit up to 20 short films made in the UAE to the Short Film Corner at the Marche du Film, a dedicated showcase at Cannes for short films from all over the world, mostly previously unseen, as well as the films included in the Official Competition, the Cinefondation, the Director's Fortnight and Critic's Week, ADFC said in an emailed release.
The call for entries for filmmakers to join the Abu Dhabi delegation is open to all emerging and professional Emirati Directors and Producers. Deadline for entries is April 10, 2011. Last year's filmmakers participated in a full diary of meetings and business events at Abu Dhabi Pavilion, which is located in the international village and serves as a meeting place for international filmmakers and accredited industry delegates.
"Cannes attracts the largest group of distributors, producers, and film industry professionals in the world, and is an ideal platform for us to showcase the talent of emerging Emirati directors," said ADFC Director David Shepheard. "We're delighted to once again offer four filmmakers the chance to experience the festival, connect with their peers in the global industry, develop their business skills and further their ambitions as filmmakers." The Cannes program, now in its second year, is one of a number of initiatives under ADFC to promote emerging voices from the region. Through a partnership with the European Producers Club, ADFC brought a group of the UAE's leading film producers to the Berlin International Film Festival this year. Last year ADFC also hosted a group of up-and-coming filmmakers at the Cannes and Sundance Film Festivals and continue with the acclaimed Shasha Grant, ADFC's annual US$100,000 screenwriting and development prize.
