Pakistani troops save Turkish ambassador in Ivory Coast

ANKARA (A.A) - 13.04.2011 - Pakistani troops have saved the Turkish ambassador along with Turkish embassy staff as clashes intensified in Ivory Coast.
Ankara asked the UN peace force in the west African country to rescue Ambassador Yalcin Kaya Eronsoy and Turkish embassy staff who were trapped in a hotel where gun battle was going on in rival factions.
Pakistani troops rushed to the clash zone and took the ambassador and embassy staff to a secure location in the southern part of the country.
Pakistani troops also rescued a Turkish businessman from clashes.
Eronsoy, embassy staff and the Turkish businessman are expected to return home in the coming days.
Clashes have erupted in the world's biggest cocoa producer after President Laurent Gbagbo refused to accept he lost elections in November. During the four-month stand-off between the two rivals for the presidency about 1,500 people were killed and a million forced from their homes. Gbagbo was captured on Monday. Alassane Ouattara was sworn in as the new president.
Pakistani troops have been deployed in Ivory Coast since 2004 as UN Peacekeepers.
