Iran Urges Int'l Bodies to React to Suppression of Bahraini People

TEHRAN, April 20 (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast urged the world international bodies and Muslim circles, including the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), to fulfill their responsibility towards shocking events in the region and take serious action to stop suppression of the people in Bahrain.

Speaking to reporters in a weekly press conference here on Tuesday, Mehman-Parast pointed to the suppression and massacre of the people in Bahrain, Yemen, Libya and some other regional countries, and stressed "Countries and international circles should take serious moves and practical steps."

"Their silence will reveal their politically-tainted views on human rights to the public opinion," he continued.

He said that the Iranian foreign ministry has contacted many world countries' officials as well as the authorities of the regional and international organizations to remind them that they are necessitated to fulfill their responsibility towards the current developments and nations in the region and prevent any further violation of the nations' rights and massacre of the people in the regional countries, specially Bahrain.

Mehman-Parast further stressed the vital role of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in the same regard, and added, "The OIC is expected not to keep mum and show acceptable moves and enter the scene in a bid to stop these unjustifiable attitudes which are shown against the regional people's peaceful demonstrations and their legitimate demands."

His remarks come as Bahraini security forces have been brutally suppressing anti-government protesters in the tiny Persian Gulf island. So far, at least 40 people have been killed, almost 100 have gone missing and about 1,000 others have been injured.

Tension is growing high after the Saudi military intervention in Bahrain. Bahrain, which hosts the US Navy's fifth fleet, is viewed as a very sensitive and determining factor in the power equations of the region.

To help the Bahraini government crush the anti-government protests, Saudi Arabia has deployed over 1,000 troops in the country.
