Hostilities renew at Yemeni tribal leader''s home, 6 deaths reported

SANAA, May 24 (KUNA) -- At least six Yemenis were killed and 30 others injured as clashes broke out anew between supporters of dissident tribal leader Sheikh Sadeq Al-Ahmar and the security forces at Al-Ahmar's home in Al-Hasaba neighborhood, north Sanaa, on Tuesday.
Some of the victims are members of the mediation committee trying to broker a deal between the government and the opposition forces; these include chief of the committee Sheikh Mohammad Abu Lahoum and Chief of the Political Security Dept. Maj.-Gen. Ghaleb Al-Qamsh.
The Ministry of Interior said gunmen belonging to Al-Ahmar's Hashed tribe attacked its headquarters, set it ablaze and killed a policeman, blaming the unrest on the tribal leader.
On the other hand, sources of the tribe said Al-Ahmar's home came under attack by the security forces and the Republican Guard Corps who used RPGs and mortar shells.
Fierce figh ting is going on in the vicinity of the ministries of interior and local government and the Sanaa Police Station since midday, witnesses said.
The fighting damages many houses and triggered panic among the citizens.
The opposition Joint Meeting Parties (JMPs) accused the security forces and supporters of President Ali Abdullah Saleh of breaching the truce deal reached last night after a similar deadly clash.
"The security forces used various weapons on the attack on Al-Ahmar's home where the mediators were meeting to discuss how to defuse the tension," according to a JMPs statement.
"The attack shows that Saleh and his clique went mad due to the growing popularity of Sheikh Al-Ahmar," the statement added.
The JMPs appealed to "the brothers and friends" of Yemen to step in immediately and abort "the serious designs" which could inflict large damage to Yemen, the region and the world at large.
