UAE urges NAM to work to establish Palestinian State along the 1967 borders
Nusa Dua, Bali, INDONESIA, May 29, 2011 (WAM) - UAE said that the time has come for the Palestinian State take the natural seat of its own in the UN General Assembly Hall when it convenes in its next session, and it is imperative that the member states in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) have to work to achieve this goal.
Addressing the 16th ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement that concluded in Bali, Indonesia on Friday, Assistant Foreign Minister for international organisations Dr. Saeed Mohammed Al-Shamsi also said that peace will never come to pass in the Middle East so long as the Palestinian people are denied the right of establishing their own state on borders that existed on 4th June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The NAM ended the three-day meeting on Friday with calls for it to strengthen relations between member countries, especially those in the Middle East.
In the joint statement, the ministers participating in the meeting "reaffirmed the long-standing international consensus recognising the Palestinian people as a nation and recognising their inalienable right to self-determination and independence in their state of Palestine, with east Jerusalem as its capital".
In his address, Al Shamisi said that the permanent and log lasting peace in the Middle East requires Israel's withdrawal from all the occupied Palestinian and Arab lands including Syria's Golan Heights and the occupied lands of Lebanon.
Israel should return to the borders of 4th June 1967 as per the legitimate international resolutions and the Arab peace Initiative, reiterated Al Shamisi.
UAE delegation to the NAM Ministerial Meeting was headed by Dr. Saeed Al Shamsi and was composed of the Permanent Representative of UAE to the United Nations Ahmad Al Jarman, Director Department of International Organisations at the UAE Foreign Ministry Khalifa Shaheen Al Marri, UAE Ambassador to Indonesia Yusuf Rashid Al Sharhan, Dr. Alia Bukhatir Director of Office of the Assistant Minister, First Secretary at the UAE's Permanent Mission in New York Hamad Obaid Al Zaabi and a number of other officials.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a group of states who are aligned formally with or against any major power bloc. Established in 1961 NAM has 118 countries as its members and 20 countries as observers.
Al Shamsi held a number of bilateral meetings with heads of delegations of countries participating in the conference and discussed with them bilateral relations and issues of common interest. He met with the Indian Union Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sri Lankan Minister of Overseas Labour welfare, Foreign Minister of Indonesia, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan and other ministers from Belarus, Somalia, Cambodia and Venezuela.
In his address at the meeting, Al Shamisi supported the views expressed in the statements of Argentina, who represented the Group of 77 and China. He also welcomed the joining of Azerbaijan and Fiji in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
From 1961 until 2011, a lot of water has passed under the bridge. This has changed the international scene as has changed many of the agenda of regional and international blocks and organisations. "The old polarities have vanished and new international issues have emerged. As a result we must we must set our sights on the future and be an active part in it", Al Shamisi said.
We look forward to seeing our movement rearrange its priorities and focus on the agenda that is consistent with the spirit of the times and keep pace with shifts in the world, said Al Shamisi.
He added that this involves the work for the future to overcome the effects of the global economic and financial crisis, as well as active participation in the rebuilding of international governance for the reform of the financial and economic system to avoid other crises and enhance sustainable development.
This should create the political will to resolve international disputes, and should bring about the necessary power for regional peace-building, maintenance of security and stability, victory in the battle against climate change, assistance and help to the weaker countries to face the negative impacts of climate change and natural disasters, the elimination of international terrorism, the fight against organised crimes and trafficking in human beings, protection of human rights and empowerment of women, protection of the most vulnerable groups in the society, the eradication of poverty, need and deadly diseases, progress in the issues of disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation and eradication of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction, Al Shamisi said. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
