PRESIDENT CHAIRS LIMITED CABINET MEETING ON EDUCATION BUDGET

Jakarta, Sept 9 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the company of Vice President Jusuf Kalla chaired a limited cabinet meeting to discuss the government's plan to increase the funds allocation for education in the 2009 state budget.

Present at the meeting which started at 10 on Tuesday morning were also National Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo, Coordinating Minister for Economy Sri Mulyani, Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto, Health Affairs Minister Siti Fadilah Supari, State Minister for Administrative Reforms Taufik Effendi, and Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa.
In his state of the nation address on the Draft 2009 State Budget and Financial Note at a House of Representatives (DPR) plenary session on August 15, 2008, President Yudhoyono said the government would give priority to the education sector.

On the occasion the head of state said, during the past few years the budget allocated to the National Education Ministry represented the highest figure compared to allocations for other ministries.

"The budget for education has almost doubled from Rp78.5 trillion in 2005 to Rp154.2 trillion in 2008. In fact, for the 2009 budget, in the midst of the global oil and food price crisis that has adversely impacted our economy, we have been able to meet the requirement to set aside 20 percent of the State Budget for education as mandated by the Constitution," the president said in his address.

He said the increased budget would be disbursed, among other things, for rehabilitation of school buildings and construction of tens of thousands of classroom and new schools.

In line with the spirit of decentralization, Yudhoyono said the government had since 2005 provided grants in the form of direct operational assistance, better known as School Operational Assistance (BOS).

Yudhoyono expressed hope that with BOS and the participation of the regional governments, the Compulsory Nine-Year Basic Education program could be effectively put in place at a low cost and affordable by the people.
