Kuwait''s Al-Azmi wins 2nd gold in Asian Championship

KOBE, Japan, July 10 (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti champion Mohammed Al-Azmi on Sunday clinched his second gold at the 19th Asian Athletics Championships, as he won the men's 800 meters with 1:46.14, following his 1,500 meter victory on Friday.
Iranian Sajad Moradi finished second with 1:46.35 and India's Ghamnda Ram took third with 1:46.46. Al-Azmi expressed hope that he will also pick up the gold in the 800 meter race at the global competition next month in South Korea.
Speaking to reporters after the victory, Al-Azmi said, "Following the gold medal in the 1,500 meters two days ago, I won another race today. I am very happy to get two golds in this Asian Championships. I had won gold medals before, but this is my first time to win two in the same competition." He added, "As my race was scheduled at 3 p.m., I was already tired from high temperature and humidity here, and my condition wasn't very good. But I won with the strategy of going behind the Japanese runner and surging hard in the last 200 meter. My goal now is to win the 800 meter gold medal in the World Championships in Daegu in August. I have no plan to compete in the 1,500 meters." He also showed satisfactory for his participation in the Kobe meet, saying, "I am also glad to be part of this competition in Japan. It was so full of hospitality and well managed with good punctuality." Kuwait has claimed three gold medals in this four-day meet at Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium, western Japan, as Ali Al-Zinkawi won the title in the men's hammer throw on Saturday. About 500 athletes from 45 countries are competing at the Asian Athletics Championships running through today.
Winners in Kobe ensure automatic berths in the World Athletics Championships in the South Korean city of Daegu from August 27-September 4.
