Kuwaiti journalists, artists in Palestinian territories in gesture of support

RAMALLAH, July 12 (KUNA) -- A delegation of Kuwaiti journalists and artists is visiting the Palestinian territories in a gesture of support to the Palestinian people who are suffering challenges beyond just closures and economic hardships and going as far as to threaten their very cultural identity.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas received the delegation Tuesday at the PA headquarters in Ramallah, and said the next challenge facing the Palestinian people is to coordinate and debate the mechanisms and details of seeking UN recognition in the Arab Follow Up Committee meeting on July 16.
He pointed out 117 countries already recognize a Palestinian entity, and several European countries recently hiked level of Palestinian diplomatic representation.
The new Palestinian leadership is meanwhile faced with the challenges of reconstruction, preparing for the elections, and the Palestinian Liberation Organization is to handle the political affairs. Unity of all Palestinians on all fronts is essential for the success of any initiative, he stressed.
There is also the economic challenge of the Israeli refusal to hand over tax revenues due the PA. Donor countries provide a certain level of assistance, but the delay in extending the funds is a problem.
The PA chief met with the press delegation presided by Head of Kuwait Journalists Society Ahmad Behbehani. Abbas hosted the journalists to a banquet and hailed their gesture of support, which is much appreciated by the Palestinian people.
The delegation is planned to go on a tour of the West Bank with stops in Al-Quds (Jerusalem), Bethlehem, Al-Khalil (Hebron), and Nablus.
Kuwaiti singer Abdullah Ruwaished for his part said more Arab and gulf artists should visit and perform in the Palestinian territories and support cultu ral and public events and initiatives. He told KUNA, after the meeting with Abbas, that this is important to counter the Israeli claim to the land and its attempts to change its cultural and demographic identity.
The artist is to perform a special song for Palestine during his visit, and he said he discussed the theme and details of the song with the PA president.
