Kuwait gov''t toughens sanctions on spoiled food
KUWAIT, July 24 (KUNA) -- The cabinet discussed Sunday ways of countering the crimes of trading in spoiled foodstuffs which are unfit for human consumption in an effort aiming at protecting the consumers' health.
In this respect, the Cabinet has been briefed by Minister of Public Works, and Minister of State for Municipality Affairs Dr. Fadhel Safar on the measures taken by Kuwait municipality and other relevant bodies in order to further increase the monitoring of foodstuffs trade and circulation, making sure of their fitness for human consumption.
The Cabinet also reviewed laws related to such issue, and penalties which should be applied to violators, and to which extent such laws are effective in withholding people from trading in unfit foodstuffs, in addition to statistics conducted on the violatio ns made, and the legal measures taken in what finally led to the referral of these violations to the public prosecution.
In the same vein, Safar pointed to the Cabinet the steps taken by the Kuwait municipality in order to develop its apparatuses and performance in the field of observing, examining, and checking the validity of foodstuffs including setting up public authority for monitoring food and foodstuffs, and putting forward a bill that toughens penalties against violators in order to protect the health of consumers and their safety.
The Cabinet lauded that measures taken in this respect by Safar.
The Kuwaiti Cabinet held its weekly meeting at Sief palace under the headship of Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
State Minister for Cabinet Affairs, and Acting Foreign Minister Ali Fahad Al-Rashed said following the meeting that the ministers followed up the implementation of the Amiri decree on providing relie f assistance to the affected people in Somalia, and the Horn of Africa.
Such Amiri decree comes in view of the food shortage that poses a threat to the lives of millions in these regions, a thing which reflects the keenness of His Highness the Amir on meeting the humanitarian needs everywhere within the framework of the humanitarian responsibility which Kuwait always seeks to shoulder.
Consequently, the Cabinet issued its directives to charitable institutions and foundations in order to mobilize their efforts on helping the affected in the Horn of Africa with the aim of alleviating the suffering of people there, while also calling on relevant international organizations and international community to intensify their efforts, and pay due attention to such humanitarian disaster.
The Cabinet made a decision on naming the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs as the government's spokesperson, and assigned him to take all necessary measures in coordination with concerned bodies to achieve his duly prescribed tasks.
Then, the Cabinet reviewed the recommendations made by the legal affairs committee on the new bylaw of residential cities in relation to law 1993, then it decided to approve the proposed bylaw, and submit it to HH the Amir.
The Cabinet also reviewed a bill approving an agreement between the government of Kuwait, and the Lebanese government for trade cooperation, and a bill approving the charter of the International Energy Forum, and the Cabinet decided to approve the two bills, and to submit them to HH the Amir in preparation for their referral to the National Assembly.
The Cabinet also reviewed a bill approving an air services agreement between the government of Kuwait, and the government of Serbia, and bill approving an air services agreement with the government of Sierra Leone, and a bill approving an agreement with the government of Swaziland in the field of higher education, and scientific research.
The Cabinet a lso reviewed a bill approving an agreement on the scientific and technological cooperation between the government of Kuwait and the government of India, a bill approving a cooperation agreement in the field of religious affairs with the Tunisian government.
Moreover, the Cabinet also reviewed a bill approving a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Yemeni government in the field of export promotion, and a bill approving an MoU on business, trade, and technical cooperation with the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
