Al-Hameli rejoins Al-Qamzi as team Abu Dhabi head to grand prix of Ukraine
Abu Dhabi, July 27, 2011 (WAM) - Ahmed Al-Hameli will rejoin Thani Al-Qamzi in Team Abu Dhabi for this weekend's inaugural Grand Prix of Ukraine on the Kiev Sea, near Vyshgorod.
After serving a one-race suspension, Al-Hameli will replace team manager Scott Gillman in the second hot seat for Saturday's race - the first to take place in Ukraine in F1 racing history. Gillman acclimatised well to his surprise return to racing at the recent Kazan race meeting and finished a fine fourth overall, while Al-Qamzi claimed the second podium position to keep his ambitions for a first UIM F1 H20 World Championship title well alive according to Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC).
While Al-Hameli was rocked by disappointments at the opening two races in Qatar and Portugal, Al-Qamzi has been working steadily to keep the pressure on the front-running Qatar Team. He trails early season championship leader Jay Price by 21 points and Alex Carella by 19, but the third-placed Emirati is already 10 points clear of fourth-placed Frenchman Phillipe Chiappe and realises the importance of a top points score in Ukraine.
Team Abu Dhabi team principal Salem Al-Rumaithi admitted that team management had looked at the option of the three drivers sharing three race boats, but opted for Gillman to switch back to a team management role. "Without a doubt, the sharing of three boats would have been better," said Al-Rumaithi. "But we have two of the best young racers in Thani and Ahmed and Scott is vital to us in his management role to guide and train the team.
"Thani has performed very well at the last races and occupies third in the championship. It is true that luck has not been on Ahmed's side so far this year, but I am sure that his return will be strong and he can catch up on the others over the course of the next races." Team Abu Dhabi left for the Ukraine on Monday and Rashid Al-Tayer travelled with the party, fresh from his excellent recent showing at the Class 1 race in Arendal, Norway. The Emirati will return to the Team Abu Dhabi boat to take part in the UIM F-4S Championship. Al-Tayer has shared the boat with Majed Al-Mansoori this season, but both drivers were forced to miss the Kazan race because of a date clash with the Norwegian Class 1 race. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
