Cargo vessel sinking; Coastguard rescues nine persons

Mumbai, Aug 4 (PTI) Nine persons on board a cargo
vessel were rescued by Indian Coastguard after receiving a
distress signal from it that the vessel was sinking off the
western Indian Mumbai coast, officials said Thursday.
Immediately after getting the signal from the ship
M V Rak, Coastguard and Navy helicopters and boats were
deployed for rescue operations and pulled nine out of 30
people on board.
"So far, we have rescued nine persons and efforts are
underway to rescue others," coastguard officials said.
Those on board the vessel include Indonesian and
Jordanian nationals. The vessel is believed to be carrying
around 30,000 metric tonnes of coal.
