No proposal to make new law on right to justice: govt

New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) Former Law Minister M Veerappa
Moily's proposal to make the right to justice into a law
appears to have been abandoned by his successor Salman
Khurshid who told Parliament that his ministry has no such
plans.
The draft bill for the right to justice prepared during
Moily's tenure as Law Minister had provided for speedy and
cost-effective trials by laying down a 60-90 day timeline for
inquiry and a three-year deadline for completion of court
proceedings.
In response to a question in Lok Sabha (lower house of
Parliament) recently, Khurshid said his ministry had no
proposal to make a new law on the right to justice.
In response to a separate question in the Rajya Sabha
(upper house) on whether the Law Ministry was working on a
bill aimed at protecting journalists from crimes against them,
Khurshid replied in the negative.
Soon after the murder of Mumbai journalist J Dey, Moily
had said he was planning a central law in consultation with
the I and B Ministry to protect journalists and their
equipment like cameras.
