Roads and Transport Authority embarks on energy-saving measures in street lighting systems

Dubai, Aug 9, 2011 (WAM) - The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has given the green light to its Energy Saving Team, comprising experts and specialist engineers from various affiliated sectors and agencies, to start as of 1st August 2011 the implementation of a well-rehearsed plan to save power consumption of street lighting systems at residential areas in Dubai, and in the meantime ensure the smooth traffic flow as well as the safety and security of road users in the area.
"Lighting poles located in the medians of two intersecting roads, U-turns, roundabouts and intersections are being exempted from this measure," said Mohammed Abdullah Al Ali, Head of RTA Energy Saving Team, and Director of Buildings and Facilities.
The energy consumption-saving process applicable to the said lighting poles is summarised in switching off about 40% of total lighting poles in each residential district; however, this percentage varies from one district to another depending on several perimeters including the area of the district, and the number of lighting poles in place, among others.
"The partial switching off of street lighting poles at residential districts will start from 10 pm and continue till the sunrise due to the low traffic movement during these hours. It is worth-mentioning that RTA Energy Saving Team concluded to this decision following accurate studies and extensive field surveys.
"This decision is line with the Dubai Government Strategy 2015 to achieve sustainable development; which always seeks to conserve various resources of the UAE, including electricity," he added. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
