Cong steers clear of Rajiv assassin issue
New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) The Congress Tuesday refused to
be drawn into a debate on the issue of execution of three
Rajiv Gandhi assassins even as its ally Dravida Munnettra
Kazhagam (DMK) and some other parties in south Indian state
Tamil Nadu stepped up their campaign for getting them
reprieve.
Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi also refused to
comment on the Tamil Nadu Assembly adopting a unanimous
resolution, moved by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Monday
asking the President to reconsider mercy petitions of three
death row convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
"This is a purely a constitutional and legal and then an
administrative process. Congress has no role into it and won't
like to comment on it," Singhvi said.
Asked about the Madras High Court decision staying their
execution fixed for September 9 for eight weeks, Singhvi said
this validated the party's point that this was essentially a
Constitutional process followed by legal and administrative
procedures.
