India-UAE sign revised MoU on manpower

New Delhi - Sept 15, 2011 (WAM) - United Arab Emirates and India signed here on Tuesday a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on manpower that, among other things, provides for facilitation of recruitment of Indian manpower to work in the UAE.
Federal Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, Vayalar Ravi and the visiting UAE Minister of Labour, Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash, signed the document in the presence of the Undersecretary of the Labour Ministry Mubarak Saeed Al Dhahiri, UAE Ambassador to UAE Mohammed Sultan Al Oweis and a number of senior officials from both governments.
Speaking on this occasion Ghobash hailed the friendship and relations of cooperation between the UAE and India in various fields. He noted that over 1.7 million Indian citizens currently work in various emirates in the UAE.
Ghobash also expressed hope that the standing cooperation will continue and the temporary residence of the Indians in the UAE will contribute to the economic welfare of both countries.
He explained that the MoU provides for the launch of several joint initiatives in a number of areas and will facilitate to attract Indian labour to the UAE abiding by established legal practices which are transparent and fair.
On this occasion, Ravi said the move will strengthen the symbiotic relationship and mutual cooperation between the two countries.
He said e-governance in migration project is a major initiative taken by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs. He also appreciated the measures taken by the UAE government to improve the condition of workers.
The revised MoU allows the Ministry in implementing Web Based Attestation Procedure for employment contracts for Indian workers in UAE by the Embassy of India, Abu Dhabi.
A need to revise the MoU, between the two countries signed in December, 2006 was felt to address various problems faced by the Indian workers in the UAE.
Besides facilitating in recruitment, the revised MoU provides for a broad procedure for employment and responsibilities of Indian workers; responsibilities of their employers; exchange of knowledge and experience in job-creation and generation of employment opportunity; protection and welfare of workers under the labour laws and regulation in the UAE; authentication of work contract between employer, employee and the Ministry of Labour, Government of UAE; and constitution of a Joint Committee comprising at least three members each from both the Governments to implement provision of the MoU.- Emirates News Agency, WAM
