174 burn patients treated in 18 months at CMC Hospital Larkana

RATODERO, September 28, 2011 (PPI): As many as 174 burn patients were treated at Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Larkana, during January 2010 to end of June 2011.

These figures were submitted to the Health Department by the Medical Superintendent (MS) of the CMCH in response to the Sindh Assembly question of MPA Saifuddin Khalid.

It is pertinent to mention here that it is also a fact that this largest 1300-bed teaching health facility of upper Sindh has still no separate Burns Ward and only minor cases are treated here in the Medical or Surgical Wards.

Its building has been completed but the required instruments and equipment is yet to be procured & delivered at all the four sites. Sindh Health Department had approved establishment of four such Burns Units in Sindh and according to sources none of them have been made functional due to non-availability of machinery, required trained doctors and other paramedical staff hence all such cases are referred to Karachi multiplying miseries of the suffering mankind.

These Wards were to be made operational during the last financial year but due to financial problems caused by the last years devastating floods all the required equipment/instruments were neither purchased by the Health Department nor the Wards were made functional for the benefit of poor patients and they continue to suffer for no fault of theirs. Usually all the revenue cost is placed at the disposal of the concerned MS but in this special case the health department put all the budgetary approved amount in their own hands which has also complicated the problem as the then Health Secretary wanted machinery to be procured from distributors of his choice whereas the Health Minister wanted suppliers of his choice, sources claimed, resulting loss of precious human lives at the cost of these tactics.

The people of Larkana have urged the President Asif Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah to take notice of this situation and order release of funds to the concerned MS so that the required machineries could be purchased on emergency basis for fulfilment of slain PPP chairpersons’ vision about health and education.
