MALAYSIA'S CREATIVE CONTENT INDUSTRY HAS GROWN TREMENDOUSLY, SAYS INFO MINISTRY SEC-GEN

CANNES (France), Oct 5 (Bernama) -– Malaysia's creative content industry has
grown tremendously in the past few years through great commitment and concerted
effort of the Malaysian government.

Information Communication and Culture Ministry secretary-general Kamaruddin
Siaraf said many companies in the industry have benefited from the
various assistance programmes, both financial and non-financial, offered by the
government.

“I am pleased to note that the Malaysian government under the leadership of
the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) with the support of the
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Multimedia
Development Corporation (MDeC), in association with the Malaysian External Trade
Development Corporation (Matrade), have continued to play a pivotal role in
supporting the development of the entertainment and media industry.

“As a result, the Malaysian content industry is getting more exciting as we
now witness more world-class IPs (intellectual properties) being developed in
Malaysia for global and local consumption,” he said when speaking at the
Creative Malaysia cocktail reception here Tuesday.

Fifteen deals worth more than US$60 million sealed by Malaysian companies
were announced at MIPCOM 2011. The deals with their foreign partners are related
to international co-productions, distributions and global product launches.

Kamaruddin, who is heading Malaysia’s delegation to MIPCOM 2011, said the
Malaysian government's strategy under the Economic Transformation Programme
(ETP) would nurture the entertainment and media industry which would eventually
transform Malaysia into a regional hub for digital content.

Under the "My Creative Content" parallel to the ETP initiative, Malaysia
targets to achieve a Gross National Income (GNI) of US$1 billion by 2020, create
10,300 jobs and secure an export of 45 per cent of its GNI targets, he said.

The ETP, driven via 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs), and one of it
"Communications, Content and Infrastructure" encompasses industries and
professions that facilitate and support the growth of the new economy such
as broadband internet, telecommunications, online content, mobile applications
and internet-based services, he said.

Elaborating on the funding and incentives offered by the government,
Kamaruddin
said MDeC’s US$25 million MAC3 Co-Production Grant last year successfully
spurred a slate of international animation co-production projects.

“The grant has produced well-known IPs such as SeeFood, Balla Bowl and this
year, MDeC has reopened its popular funds as of June 15 in search of new
animations, games and computer-generated graphics,” he said.

Kamaruddin said the Malaysian Ministry of Information, Communications and
Culture also announced two additional new funds last month, namely the Creative
Industry Development Fund and the Visual Effects-CGI Fund, to encourage more
Malaysians’ involvement in the creative content industry.

Not only focused to local players, Malaysia also has a lot to offer to the
global industry players, as truly a regional hub for content development, he
said.

He said the key strengths of the Malaysian film and television studios were
the richness of their culture and heritage, as well as its competitive
incentives, state-of-the-art production facilities, low operating costs and its
political stability.

To add to the excitement, Kamaruddin said the Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia,
which earlier announced its plans on its establishment of its US$120 million
studio complex in Iskandar Malaysia, will also be helping and guiding the
Malaysian content industry grow and prepare Malaysia as a major global
content player in 2012.

“The studio, jointly built by Pinewood Shepperton of United Kingdom and
the Malaysian government's investment arm, Khazanah Holdings, expects to
generate an economic profit of RM1 billion (US$312.81 million) over a period of
eight years.

“And also create 3,000 direct jobs and potentially another 5,000 indirect
jobs a year from rising number of foreign films and television shoots,” he said.

MIPCOM, is the global content event for co-producing, buying, selling,
financing and distributing entertainment content across all platforms.
