HISTORY TAUGHT NOW ACCURATE AND RELEVANT - DPM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- History taught under the existing school
curriculum is accurate and relevant, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin told
the Lower House of Parliament on Wednesday.

Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said the ministry gave importance
to accuracy in the subject but did not ignore comprehension and interpretation
in terms of philosophy.

Nevertheless, he said, there were many opinions and differing
interpretations about the country's history from various people and, on top of
that, there was much exaggeration through the input of political elements.

"As such, the existing content need not be disputed, with regard to the
historical events and their interpretation. Let us leave the accuracy to the
experts," he said when replying to a question from Member of Parliament (MP)
Mahfuz Omar (PAS-Pokok Sena).

The opposition MP had wanted to know about the interpretation of history by
philosopher Prof Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas who had reportedly
uncovered new facts, some of which contradicted parts of the accepted text.

Earlier, when replying to a written question from MP Shamsul Anuar Nasarah
(BN-Lenggong), Muhyiddin said a special committee to study the history
curriculum and secondary school history textbook was set up on May 3 last year.

"The preliminary findings of the committee were that the existing curriculum
is still relevant but its scope needs to be scrutinised, expanded and rearranged
to make it clearer and more easily understood by students," he said.

Muhyiddin said he expected to receive a complete report from the committee
by May next year at the latest.

He also said that to ensure that the younger generation could be moulded and
exposed to historical knowledge at an early stage of schooling, history would be
introduced as a subject at the primary school level in stages from 2014.

"Pupils would be evaluated fully through the school-based assessment," he
said, adding that it was a foundation for the new generation to make accurate
consideration and not be influenced by the propaganda of certain quarters.

In the meantime, to encourage the participation of students in
history-related activities, specifically touching on patriotism, Muhyiddin said
he had asked the ministry to study the per capita grant for the subject to
ensure that it was adequate for the activity requirements.
