HAVE HEART CHECKED IF YOU GET BREATHLESS EASILY, SAYS EXPERT

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- If you get breathless easily when
exercising, walking or going up the stairs, and are aged 40 or above, you are advised to have a heart examination soon.

The National Heart Institute (IJN) consultant cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Jeswant Dillon said these could be symptoms of heart valve or coronary problems.

He said an individual with such problems would usually suffer pain on the left of the chest and frequently have difficulty breathing.

"The condition of the heart is actually different among individuals, but those at risk are men more than 40 years old and women more than 45 years old,” he told Bernama at the Kuala Lumpur Valve Summit 2011 here on Thursday.

"Sometimes, the symptoms are felt not only during exercising but also when going to sleep, and the individual is at high risk of getting a heart attack."

Dr Jeswant advised individuals experiencing such symptoms to go for a heart examination so that the disease can be detected early.

Among the ways to prevent heart disease is to have a healthy lifestyle, with regular exercise, and engage in physical activities to strengthen the heart, he said.

Also, reduced consumption of salt and sugar in food and drink is very effective in cutting the risk of a heart attack, he added.

Dr Jeswant said IJN offers a variety of the latest technology heart
surgeries at a low cost.

"The question now is the mindset of the community, which must present themselves at IJN or any hospital nearby to carry out an examination," he said.
