KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - The government's efforts in driving sustainable development, spurring innovation and growing the healthcare sector, are set to raise Malaysia's competitiveness and retain its attraction as a destination for investments, says General Electric (GE) Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Dean.

"We believe that Malaysia is set to transform itself into a leading global economy," he said, adding that the company strongly supported the government efforts taken towards it.

He said these efforts, supported by the government's forecast of increased private and public investment boded well for Malaysia's continued development.

Prime Minister Najib Razak on Friday presented the 2012 Budget at the Parliament with a myriad of measures to enhance public and private sector investments, as well as innovations and development in all areas of economy.

In a statement here on Friday, Dean said: "We believe that innovation is key to driving development and these steps will support Malaysia as it transforms itself into a high-income nation.

"GE has developed 'ecosystems' in Malaysia where we work with local partners to support government initiatives, including the partnership with the F1 Team Lotus to develop and implement programs for innovative solutions for the automobile industry in Malaysia and globally for hydrocarbon-based and electric vehicles."

Meanwhile, he also said that the take up rate for green vehicles will continue to increase due to the extended full exemption of import and excise duties on hybrid and electric cars to 2013.

In the 2012 Budget, Najib also proposed full exemption of import and excise duty on hybrid and electric cars to continue to be given to franchise holders to promote green technology and ensure sustainable development of the nation.
