MALAYSIANS QUALIFY FOR US VISA LOTTERY PROGRAMME
NEW YORK (Bernama) - Malaysia is considered to have low rate of immigration to the United States, hence its nationals qualify for the visa lottery programme which the United States government uses to attract qualified people from low-immigration countries.
The visa lottery, a programme mandated by the US Congress, allows the issuance of 50,000 green cards to people from certain countries from where immigration is considered to be low.
The level of immigration from Malaysia is much lower than those from other Asian countries, notably China, India, the Philippines, which have, traditionally, provided substantial immigration flows to the United States in the past, according to the US Department of State’s website.
The numbers from these three countries are so over-subscribed that
the waiting periods for some immigrant categories run into a decade or even longer.
To offset the low immigration from other countries, Congress introduced a Diversity Immigrant Visa Programme for low immigration countries such as Malaysia, Belarus and Algeria, says the website.
The programe, aimed at diversifying the immigrant population of the United States, is limited to countries from where new immigrants to the US have been below 50,000 each year.
To participate in the Program Registration for the 2013 visa lottery, running from October 4 to November 5, 2011, interested applicants will have to visit the Department of State’s website www.dvlottery.state.gov.
The Malaysian community in the United States, some of whom have not had pleasant experiences in the past, caution interested applicants not to fall for the tall claims made by some touts who are out to make the proverbial “fast buck” at the expense of the unsuspecting victim.
The US authorities also point out that there is no fee to apply.
Each applicant is allowed to file only one application; defaulting
applicants who apply more than once will be disqualified.
