FIRST SESSION OF SINGAPORE'S 12TH PARLIAMENT SET TO BEGIN
SINGAPORE, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam will address the city-state's parliament on Monday night, marking the first session of the republic's 12th Parliament after the general election in May.
Members of Parliament will first elect a new Speaker before the speech and take their oaths of allegiance.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had earlier nominated Michael Palmer, MP for Punggol East Single Member Constituency, for the Speaker's post.
The new parliament will comprise of 90 members, with 81 from the ruling People's Action Party (PAP).
There are six members from the opposition Workers' Party and three
non-constituency MPs.
Parliament will start a week-long debate on the president's speech on Oct 17.
