FAMILY, COMMUNITY SUPPORT NEEDED TO HELP PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES RECOVER
SANDAKAN (Sabah, Malaysia), Oct 11 (Bernama) -- Family and community support is important to help people with mental health issues recover, Duchess of Kent Hospital psychiatrist Dr Ahmad Qabil Khalib said.
He said most people with such disorder could be effectively treated but said that biological treatment through the use of medicines alone was not enough to help them recover fully.
"Family and community support and psychosocial rehabilitation programmes will be needed," he said at the Ren Ai Sandakan Counselling Association dinner here on Monday night.
He said that mental disorder's prevalence in the society was about 10 per cent.
Ahmad Qabil, who is the association's advisor, said the association would help people with mental health issues integrate back into the society and become productive members.
Those taking part in the association's programme had shown positive response because it allowed them to engage in constructive interaction and enhance their self-confidence and skills, he added.
